Based on a joint program with pro mente entitled "pro mente goes eastern europe", we began to develop new standards in psychiatric aftercare in Eastern Europe in 2005. Financed by the Austrian Development Agency, projects were carried out in the psychiatric ward in Suceava, in the psychiatric ward in Chernivci and in the psychiatric ward in Braceni in Edinet, with the aim of improving the infrastructure and therapeutic services for patients. In Moldova, this has developed into a long-standing commitment that includes the following sub-areas:
Living
In a small farmhouse in the village of Braceni, the first fully autonomous and dislocated residential facility for people from the large psychiatric institution was created. 6 former psychiatric patients live together in this house and are accompanied 24/7 by a social pedagogical team. They take care of themselves to a large extent and after 3 years they are excellently integrated into the village structure and are absolutely recognized and respected. In Moldova, this residential community has created a completely new offer in psychiatric aftercare, which has a real model character.
Consulting
Back in 2011, we opened a counseling office in the center of the city, based on the model of the Clubhouse movement. This office is now very well known regionally and is much frequented by people seeking advice. It is also a social meeting place for people with disabilities, for people at risk of poverty, for single parents and for people from socially and ethnically marginalized groups.
Work
In the city of Edinet, we have created two work opportunities for people with disabilities on an hourly basis with the laundry and a small handicraft workshop. Again and again, small orders for companies or private individuals are processed here and our clients can earn a few Moldovan lei (currency).
Refugees
As a result of the war in Ukraine and the proximity of Edinet to the border, many refugees have been stranded in the city and, of course, also in our country. In the meantime, we have set up a Welcome Center for the refugees, a counseling office as a first point of contact for further orientation, a kindergarten for a few carefree hours and an emergency sleeping place for mothers with small children. In addition, many meals are prepared daily in a canteen kitchen for refugees who are passing through or who have been accommodated. For further care, we have set up a donation depot in a former school, where people can stock up on textiles, hygiene articles, toys and everyday necessities. The most important cooperation partner here is Volkshilfe Oberösterreich.
